How To Get A Job And Residence Permits In Switzerland

In a previous article about Switzerland, I mentioned how you can find a job in the country, and in today's article, I am going to talk about the conditions that you should fulfill to be given access in the country and to get a job.

Conditions to enter and work in Switzerland:

Entering the Swiss territory depends on the purpose and on the duration of the stay. To work in Switzerland , an authorization of stay is required, as well as a visa according to the nationality. Switzerland is a member of EURES network. There are certain conditions to enter the Swiss territory and be able to work. These conditions are:

1- A valid travel document (passport, ID card, etc.) valid and recognized by Switzerland.

2- In certain cases, of a visa, check the information of the State Secretariat of migrations (SEM) on here.

3- Have sufficient financial means to support yourself in Switzerland.

4- Have a residence permit.

5- Have an employment contract.

Note:

* Foreigners and the foreigners, who enter Switzerland to live there and work, have to announce to the control of inhabitants of their new municipality of place of residence before beginning to work.

* There are some other conditions to enter and work in Switzerland and they are based on nationality. Concerning the residence permit, Switzerland makes a distinction, with regard to the nationality, between the nationals of the member states of the EU / EFTA and the non-EU/EFTA nationals.

When and how you get a Residence Permit?

If the stay lasts less than three months and if you perform no lucrative activity on the Swiss territory during this period, then a residence permit is not necessary. But, if you enter Switzerland to exercise a lucrative activity, then you need to residence permit.

To apply for a residence permit, it is necessary that you have an employment contract of a Swiss employer or a contract of services for a Swiss principal. The application must be deposited before entering Switzerland.

If you are subjected to the bond of visa, you receive an insurance of residence permit with the visa. The application can be also made by the employer or the principal. It is then the employer or the principal who takes care of formalities.

Residence permits are issued by the cantonal authorities. The federal structure of Switzerland contains three levels: the Confederacy, the cantons and the municipalities; and the execution of the law on foreigners is within the capability of cantons. Their addresses are available here.

The European Job Mobility Portal (EURES)

The European Job Mobility Portal (EURS) aims at facilitating the mobility of workers in Europe. It puts at their disposal a network of more than 900 advisers. These specialists inform, direct and support the job-seekers, who want to work in a member state of the European Union (EU) or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). They inform them about the possibilities of employment as well as about the working and living conditions in these countries.

Switzerland joined the EURES network on June 1st, 2002, within the framework of the agreement on the free circulation of people. This network was created in 1993 by the European Commission.

Note:

To get information about the mobility in Europe, consult job offers and know the educational and training possibilities on the website of EURES, and for Switzerland more particularly, check here.
