How To Get A Student Visa And Be Able To Work In Canada

Every year, a lot of people immigrate to Canada. Those people may seek a better life, a better job or a better education. In this article, I am going to talk about how you can get a study visa to be able to study and work as well in Canada.

What you need to obtain a Canadian study visa:

To study in Canada, it is necessary to obtain a student visa, unless you are going to study English or French for less than three months. And to obtain a student visa, you need first to have a letter of acceptance of a school or a Canadian university, and which you can get after contacting the department or the faculty which interests you in the various universities in Canada and you can ask for a registration form as well. To finde out more about the different programs available in different Canadian universities, you can check here to get a list of all Canadian universities and their programs.

When you receive the letter of acceptance, you can complete the student application form available on the website of the Canadian embassy or consulate in your country. You will also have to provide to the embassy or consulate proofs of sufficient financial resources to stay without working throughout the whole school year in Canada. You can, for example, provide a bank statement which gives evidence of your savings.

Notes:

* If you plan to study in Quebec, it will be necessary to obtain the CAQ, the certificate of acceptance of Quebec.

* If you are a French person, know that certain agreements are signed between France and Quebec. You can learn more about that on here.

* If there are French people, who took advantage of an agreement between Quebec and France for tuition fees, they have to pay as the other Canadian students in Quebec, starting from Spetember, 2015.

* Every person who wants to study at a university in Quebec, should get the CAQ after receiving a letter of acceptance from a school or university located within Quebec.

Documents to take with you to the Canadian embassy or consulate:

1- Completed student's visa application form.

2- A copy of the six front pages of your passport.

3- (02) passport-size photos.

4- The original or a certified copy of the letter of acceptance of the Canadian university or school.

5- The proof of financial means.

6- For the province of Quebec: a certificate of acceptance of Quebec (CAQ)

7- Visa fees.

Can a student work during his/her studies?

Before 2006, foreign students were not allowed to work in Canada, unless the work is on campus. But, since 2006, this has changed and foreign students become able to work outside the university campus during their studies in Quebec or in other terretories of Canada. Most of the postsecondary establishments (voccational schools and universities) authorize the students to work with a limit of 20 working hours a week.

Since June, 1st, 2014, foreign students no longer need a work permit to work outside campus. They can work during their studies from their arrival in the country, without waiting 6 months as it was the case in the past. They have to ask for a social insurance number from Service Canada.

Notes:

* Students participating in exchange programs are not eligible.

Can a foreign student work and immigrate in Canada after finishing studies?

It is possible after you obtain a diploma from Quebec to work in Quebec for a period of time in the field of your study or training. And to be able to work, it is necessary to apply for a work permit at MICC in the 60 days following the delivery of your diploma.

If you want to stay in Quebec after you finish your studies and get a diploma, and if the permanent residence interests you, then you need to know that since February, 2010, you can pass the program of the experience of Quebec (PEQ). The latter facilitates, under certain conditions, the access to the permanent resident status to the graduates and the temporary workers of Quebec.
