Live And Work In Iceland

The republic of Iceland, also known as "The Land of Fire and Ice," is a so beautiful country that lies in the north Atlantic Ocean east of Greenland and just touches the Arctic Circle. It is home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe, and some of the world's most active volcanoes. However, as you wouldn't expect, the Gulf stream resulted in Iceland having a mild winter and a cool refreshing summer.

In 2017, it is expcted that about 2 million people will visit Iceland. In the past 5 years, more than 1/3 of jobs were created in tourism. Iceland's economy depends also on the fishing industry with more than 40% of exports, and also on geothermal and hydroelectric power, as well as aluminium smelting.

In Iceland, there are many skilled job shortages and opportunities in different sectors such as: tourism, fishing industry, healthcare, construction and IT. Bellow, I am going to tell you how you can live and work in Iceland.

1/ For the citizens of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA)

According to the application of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (the European Union, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), a national of a member country can go to live and to work in Iceland freely. However, if you plan to stay more than three months in Iceland, then you have to register yourself in the national register office.

2/ For the citizens outside the EU and the EEA:

If you are a citizen off the EU and the EEA, who wish to settle down in Iceland (including the holders of a resident's permit of a member country of the Schengen area), it is necessary that you make an application for a permit of stay at the immigration office before going in Iceland.

Iceland is a member of the Schengen Area since March 25th, 2001. Thus with a valid Schengen tourist visa, you can stay in Iceland for a period of less than 3 months.

If you hold a resident's permit of a member country of the Schengen Area, you can travel freely in Iceland provided that your passport will remain valid at least three months after the date of return and after the round-trip ticket (for a stay of less than 3 months).

Note: you should know that, in no way, the Embassies of Iceland issue a visa, neither tourist, nor business, nor long stay. The applicants are asked to go to another embassy of a member country of the Schengen area for the obtaining of a visa Schengen.
